This project escapes intended functionalities and pushes the boundaries of material culture. It focuses on escape from an innovative perspective, utilising ordinary, mundane components in a unique manner.

I created bread weapons as speculative pieces of design, aimed to grab attention with their satire, then as tools to raise awareness, provoke action and spark debate on gender inequality. They are critical pieces to challenge narrow assumptions and preconceptions about the roles of women and materials in everyday life.

I developed my project, creating a campaign, a protest, fighting for gender equality. In modern Britain, despite the1970 Equal Pay Act, women still earn less than men; the gender pay gap remains the clearest and most dramatic example of economic inequality for women today.

To progress my project, I held a ‘Be Your Own Breadwinner’ workshop. I invited different women to create bread weapons and discuss their gender inequality experiences.
